A Unique Collaboration

For the first time ever in the history of quality auctions in Finland, Bukowskis and Photographic Gallery Hippolyte are collaborating in a long term bid to introduce photography on the Finnish auction scene.

Photography is in high demand on the international art market. Finnish photo artists have established themselves among the top names, thus ensuring that Finland is perceived as one of the most exciting countries in the world in this field.

In Sweden photography is a must at Bukowskis’ quality auctions, where works by top names like Irving Penn "Motorcycle policeman, New York 1951" (sold for 29 000 €) and David LaChapelle "Negative Currency: 50 Dollar Bill used as Negative" (sold for 36 000 €) attract buyers from all over the world. Now the time is right to introduce works of well-known photographers at Bukowskis auctions in Helsinki.

"Finnish design and contemporary art have been in great demand on the international art market for several years. Finnish photo artists are among the most talented and successful in their field, and we feel that the time has come to meet the growing demand for photo art at our Finnish auctions", Helena Laakso, Bukowskis’ photo expert in Finland, explains.

"As the leading quality auction house in the Nordic countries, Bukowskis represents solid knowledge of art and of the art market. This is reflected in the great number of faithful customers that Bukowskis has. Collectors and art lovers on every continent buy and sell through us on a regular basis. Photography is highly sought after at our auctions in Sweden, and we look forward to a similar trend over time here in Finland", adds Christian Boman, CEO of Bukowskis Finland.

Photographic Gallery Hippolyte in Helsinki was founded in 1978. It is one of the oldest galleries specializing in photography in the Nordic countries.

"Since the 1980s photography has developed into one of the most interesting and dynamic forms of art on the Finnish art scene. Today, Finnish photo artists have established themselves among the internationally acclaimed top names. At Hippolyte we are experts in our field and happy to collaborate with Bukowskis. Together we can offer international buyers the best of contemporary photo art", says Mitro Kaurinkoski, director of Photographic Gallery Hippolyte.

In October works by such internationally acclaimed names as Ulla Jokisalo, Marjukka Vainio and Sandra Kantanen will be exhibited at Bukowskis Helsinki, along with works by ten other well-known Finnish photo artists.

The works will first be exhibited separately 10-16 October, and again 28 October-8 November as part of the viewing of Bukowskis’ Modern + Contemporary & Design auction.

The works will be auctioned during the Modern + Contemporary & Design auction 9-10 November 2011. Iso Roobertinkatu 12, Helsinki. Open Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 5 pm.
